  1. It doesn't seem that the Hildebrandt's interprtations of Middle-earth are greatly appreciated on this web site. I understand that they might not always be accurate to the text, but I think they capture what Tolkien's world is about more than many other illustrators. Though not all pictures are great, the one above captures the tone so important to the work. Their use of color, their choice of composition, their depiction of the faces of the characters captures the seriousness of Tolkien's work but at the same time captures just the right amount of faerie. I dislike any illustration that evoke typical sword and scorcery art.

  3. The Hildebrandt brothers are excelent painters, but seeing Théoden like this, it is hard to imagine him riding his horse into war, being a powerful man. In this picture he seems just wise...

  13. One review says Theoden doesn't look strong enough to battle, another says he doesn't look weak enough to suit his description in the books. Yet another gives the picture a one because a character in the background doesn't look like they imagined her to. It's a good picture, so don't be so negative about it. I would have given it a four, but it seems to have earned an extra point for enduring so many insults = )

  25. I very much like most of the Brothers Hildebrandt interpretations of scenes from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. What many younger critics don't realize is that most of their work was done before The Silmarillion was even published! They were very popular in their day and have sold paintings for tens of thousands of dollars. Truly, they influenced many of the Tolkien artists that followed them.

This particular painting depicts this scene from The Two Towers:

"At the far end of the house...sat a man so bent with age that he seemed almost a dwarf; but his white hair was long an thick and fell in great braids from beneath a thin golden circlet upon his brow...His beard was laid like snow upon his knees; but his eyes still burned with a bright light, glinting as he gazed at the strangers. Behind his chair stood a woman clad in white. At his feet upon the steps sat a wizened figure of a man, with a pale wise face and heavy lidded eyes..."

Gandalf cured Theoden a bit of his decrepitude, but he did not magically make him 30 years younger as it appeared in Peter Jackson's movie.

  26. Now that?s hard to say and I won't discuss it in length here. Suffice it to say that I, like so many others, don?t LIKE this picture. I will freely admit it`s mostly because I?m no fan of the Hildebrandts in general. I don?t like their interpretation of the people of Middle-Earth, they look too coarse to me, with rather exaggerated features, big noses, big hands and terrible hair-dos. This is also why I don?t like thei representations of Elves the least. I also don?t think that they are very good at expressing the character?s mood with their facial expressions. Take Eowyn in this picture: She seems to be standing there, rather absent instead of fascinated that her beloved uncle regains his power.
I really didn?t like the "Scouring of the Shire"-picture, too, for the same reasons, but especially because it made the Hobbits look like a bunch of rabid dwarfs, pouncing on some innocent wanderers, not like the abused little folk, finally standing up against their oppressors. But again, that?s my personal opinion. No doubt the Hildebrandts know how to wield a paint-brush, and they are very good when it comes to colours and light.
Hm. Looks like I HAVE been rambling for quite a long time now, even if I promised not to. I?m sorry, and I hope this comment isn?t considered as trolling.

  27. I don't care for most of the Hildebrandt bros interps of Middle earth, but their artwork is good. It's not my view of middle earth, though.

And Ho Tom Bombadil..... I remember all those early Hildebrandt LOTR pictures! It was great to see SOMEONE painting LOTR based images, even if I didn't care for their "take".

If I was rating based on my personal preferences for how someone would look, I'd have to put a "2". But based on the quality of the art... probably close to a "5"
