  1. This is a cracking picture. I don't usually like Hague's style but here I think it works. The colours are well toned and accurate.

However, I think that the eagles should have been abit bigger.

  3. I like it very much. In fact, Michael Hague's work, i think, is the best art of Tolkien's work i have seen so far.

  5. The colors are vibrant and I can see the talent the man has, but it kind of makes me feel as though I'm looking at a Christmas card. Part of me wants to say: "Eeeuuu!", then the other part wants to say "It ain't so bad." Guess I'll just take my wishy-washy self down to the bottom and give the man a three.

  7. It wouldn't actually be all that bad (except for Gandalf), but the colors and combinations he chose to use give the whole thing a messy, ill-prepared look. Good try though.

  11. I really like this drawing, I like Hague and I do love the hat, I never saw any other drawer drawing Gandalf's hat this way. Hague did a drawing of Beorn, with Gandalf introducing Bilbo and that's the best Beorn representation I ever saw. I even like better Hague then the Hildebrands brothers(spellin right?)
I think their Hobbits look like little kids
But I'll put 4 since it is not his best.

  13. This is the best I've seen from Hague (though I haven't seen very much of Hague, and certainly not the celebrated pictures others have or may yet mention). The art is good, though I can see where there is room to gripe (but certainly not to the point some have!). I feel inclined to vote 3 or 4.

  17. You hate every illustration done with water colors???
The fact that you find them difficult to work with doesn't mean that water colors are "evil",does it?
Although it seems to me Mr.Hague finds it difficult too.
And I don't think it's neccecary (did I spell that right?) to submit your comment multiple times.

Help me out,I can't see the resemblence!

  21. Why is it always the ones who employ sophistocated metaphoric devices, such as those containing references to smut, who are also the ones who cant figure out how to post thier messages? The picture is fine for what it is. Its no Ted Nasmith, but better than I could do, so three it is.

  23. Though this may not always be the case for the person in question, there are certainly some people with opinions that are not worth sharing, and – though I am sure certain 'enlightened and educated persons' will disagree with me – there are certain opinions that are simply not as valid as others. Vote a 0 if you really think this picture is that bad; but if you can't explain why you think the picture is that bad without resorting to vulgarity and being outright offensive, don't waste our time.
One thing has caught my attention which might partially merit a lower rating (not than it already has, though, I think), which nobody seems to have mentioned yet; does Gandalf have any legs in this picture?

  25. I assume (or hope) you are not referring to me, Lankla...Anyway,I suppose I could summon up some things that I dislike about this piece...
First of all, obviously, those stars...They just don't look like stars to me,I'm sorry!!!
Then there's Gandalf...Well,there's something that looks a bit like him.His hat is totally unrealistic, there's no way that thing could stay on top of his head (unless it's done with a spell?!).And yes,he looks "disabled".
Also,he is way too "bright".He looks like he's glowing (maybe that's a written fact,I don't know...it's been awhile since I read The Hobbit).Anyway,he looks like a little plastic angel that you hang in your Christmas-tree (and the whole picture looks like a Christmas card or something). Also, the picture has no real depth.I also seriously dislike the tree-tops and the fire...and the lightning coming out of Gandalf's "stick"(and I think that was different in the book).
Also, those mountains...I think there is no way they can appear brighter than the sky...they should be black I think...Unless they are covered with snow?No there's still something wrong,I can't put my finger on it.There's not really something I can say about the eagles (except that I think they should be bigger) but they don't really "speak" to me either.Taniquetil said those colours were "well toned and accurate",well,I think they are not...They are totally unrealistic...There schould be more shade (it's the middle of the night, right?) and the fires should be more fierce and bright.
I hope that's enough to sort of "justify" my rating?!?

and about the joke...I said I was sorry.

  27. Sometimes I am glad they put downright bad pictures on this site. It makes people mad, annoying and sick. This leads to discussions and very, very long comments like the one above by frodotheringbearer. Also, it makes commenters of the first hour, like lanklamynen, quite 'itchy'. Good old fellow always feels like "we are wasting our (or is it his?) time".

About the multiple voting thing...everything has been said about that... I trust that our webmasters will do something about it, because this picture doesn`t deserve a 1.73 . It deserves a 2.

  29. Frodo, of course I was not refering to you; and let it not be said that you do not have well pronounced reasons for your rating! No, I was refering singularly to one "Halloween" something or other, though I see I was not very clear about it.
Master of Arda, I had quite a chuckle when I read your latest comment. But I am not 'itchy' so much as I am a deeply devoted fan of Tolkien, which makes me somewhat passionate about anything related to his work. As for wasting time, I only feel that occassionally, and it is always directed at some particular thing. In this case, (and I hope most of you will agree) it is at the comments we have from "Halloween..." which are completely useless to the furtherance of intelligently discussing art and appreciating Tolkien's work.

  31. Of course you didn`t offend the wrong people! I see now that the thing about wasting time was not the most fortunate comment I have ever made. I am to a devoted fan and can`t wait (or can I?) to see the movies. I`m sorry if I was a pain.

People like Haloween (does that got anything to do with Tolkien??) should go and waste their time somewhere else on the web. The condom thing...I just want to say I never managed to produce anything resembling a wizard by...never mind.

Sooo, everything is said. Next picture?

  43. This work of art is, admittedly, a long way from Michelangelo, or even Nasmaith (my favorite), but I fell that it's much farther away from being THE WORST ILLUSTRATION EVER. If this is the worst you've seen you've been particularly fortunate in the high quality of art you've been exposed to.

My tastes tend to be eclectic so I find a lot of art I can enjoy. I can like something without condemning the tastes of others. In fact, it's a waste of time to do so since none of my animiversions is likely to change anybody's mind.

Why isn't everyone as reasonable as I am?

  57. The edition of The Hobbit illustrated by Michael Hague is one of my greatest treasures. I've always loved his work, particularly his night skies - if only real stars looked that magical! His people aren't always as pretty as some artists', but his work has a unique style and beauty. I always tell myself, everyone has a unique point of view no less valid than my own. Thank heavens we don't all think alike, how boring would that be!
