  3. Breathtaking! Howe has a gift! He's capable of putting every little detail of my fantasies on this scene in one picture. He really does make it look like Shelob's about to attack Frodo, while Sam's on his way. I'd give it a 6, but unfortunately that's impossible.

  9. Great painting!
And can we discern an evil grimace upon Shelob?
Wouldn't want to meet her in a dark alley ( or a bright
one, either, for that matter! ) !

  11. ok.

I'm an arachnaphobe, and this piece is difficult to look at, it's SO good.

Not sure how I'm going to make it through 'The Two Towers"......as I heard Jackson's leaving in Shelob. (He had better!!!)

  19. One of the few times ,I can say that the painting exceeded my imagination, and maybe even Tolkiens.I was picturing Shelob a little more story bookish, plump and sorta lazy(for a spider)looking. But seeing this picture makes the story much more vivid,I would think Tolkien would appreciate this work very much. its now my wallpaper

  23. Creepy and beautiful at the same time. The colors are wonderful, too.
I had always pictured Shelob as menacing, but also as a bulbous, hulking type of creature... Howe's sleeker version works better for me, and will change how I think of her, now. A great painting!

  31. I had not pictured Shelob coming down from above (perhaps I misread something?) and I had also pictured her much larger and fatter. All-in-all though, (and since I believe one person meant to vote considerably higher than they did) I give it a 5.

  33. Take in this point firstly: This painting is well done. However, there are tons of errors in this picture. I can't believe that those guys out there would give it the best rating, a 5. Anyway, the first error I've noticed was that it was just way too bright, down in the lower right corner. I mean, these hobbits and Shelob are right in the horrible land of Mordor, and it's supposed to be DARK. Hello? Even in the daytime, the sky's a dark red, depressing, not bright blue like some kind of unrealistic light shining from an angel or something, which is what it's like in this picture.
The next thing I found was that Frodo, if that's who this person is, is way too young-looking. After that long journey from the Shire with all sorrows that happen in between, I believe i'd expect the hobbit to appear 10 years older than he really is, if not more. At least, he'd look older than THAT. Plus, Frodo is at least 50 years old. He finally set out on the quest on his fiftieth birthday, remember. So anyway I give this painting a 3. I'd prefer a 2, but I think this artist deserves a bit more becuase of the quality of this picture.

  35. If Howe had used realistic lighting you would complain about lack of detail. All that would be visible would be Sting, perhaps a portion of Frodo's arm and head, and perhaps a glimmer of Shelob. And that would not be a very interesting painting, although cool in a different way. Frodo was excedlingly well preserved (due to the Ring) so perhaps he had aged, we have no picture of him before.

I had picctured her with more leges but I agree this sleeker version is cool.
I really like Sam running up the path in the background

  37. The real problem with this painting is that there is a conflict in styles. If you look at it again, you will notice that Shelob looks like a detailed, realistic painting from an encyclopedia entry on spiders. Frodo, however, looks like an advanced cartoon character. This contrast is actually so jarring to the eye that it if you think about it; it almost appears to be a large real (3d) spider SITTING on a stylized, flat, almost cartoonish painting of a hobbit. The two elements separate are interesting but together they just don't work.

  59. Howe is definetly very talented. I love this picture. Although I didn't picture her coming down from above. I pictured her coming out of another tunnel, like to the right or something. But also, I agree with Mithril in that it shouldn't be blue. I can go with light blue light from sting, but I don't think that it would light up the whole series of tunnels like this. Thats Why I give it a 4.
