I think that Gimli looks just right. As to Legolas wearing armor, when he, Gimli, and Aragorn arrived in Rohan, they were given armor by the Rohirrim before leaving for Helm's Deep. The armor gives him a human touch because it is human armor.

THis is exactly how I pictured Gimli. But Legolas just looks too flashy. True, the Elves are supposed to be a beautiful people with great skills, but I never imagined them to appear like someone out of Final Fantasy.

Very good is my opinion as always when looking at John Howe's work.
As for all those critics out there questioning Howe's credibility; there's a reason he's involved in making the film you know.... (say no more)

Well Aolelorne, I believe you should think about your comment! John Howe is an extremely talented artist and is, in my opinion, the best of all of the Tolkien illustrators. The textures and colors in his art is absolutely fantastic. And I really like this painting; the lighting, color, characters, and mist all make this an awesome picture. I think that this picture is magnificent. Legolas doesn't have that much armor on, it's only the helm that makes a difference. But I thind the helm looks great on him. Gimli could use a bit more detail. Good job Howe!

Not my favorite work by John Howe, but a big improvement (in my opinion) over his "Zirakzigil", also in The Gal- lery. A "3 1/2" would have been more appropriate, but I'll be generous with a "4".

This is absolutely amazing. I do have to agree with Scythe that Gimli could have used a little work, but Legolas is just perfect. It's just like I thought he would be, except for the fact that I didn't think he wore a helm, but thinking back it might have been something I'd overlooked while reading the book and to be honest I like it. Very impressive, certainly better than I could ever do, but when it comes to John Howe and his illistrations, I think he needs a little more research. Legolas only took mail, not full armour from Theoden. Gimli's good but do you really think he traveled with all that mail? Dwarves are tough but that's just plain ridiculous. Also, Gimli's shield should have a white horse on a green field. But all in all, I commend John Howe on a well painted picture.

Gimli is exactly how I imagined him - like a short Viking. But Legolas is 'over the top', as someone who needed to draw a bow quickly, this armour would have slowed him down. Don't like the spiked extensions on his helm either.

I really like this picture! It is wonderfully done and the sunlight is really pretty! The amour on Legolas does make him look like a noble warrrior, but to man like. He is a Wood-Elf remember. This is something the Eldar would wear. Gimli looks so sad....and the hlem is a little creepy! But above that I love it!!!

I really like this painting and I can't see how anyone can complain about it. First of all Legolas armour is not bad (especially not the helmet!!!!!) and you can see on his neck he is wearig a mail and some small pieces of metal on his arms and all of that (which is not much) can't be as heavy as almost every one says... Second of all Gimli is a dwarf (which I hope everyone knows) and are very strong and they can wear all of that armour. I also like the battle scarred look of Gimli and the bow of Legolas... This is one of my absolute favourites!!!

I thought it was a breath taking picture; another tribute to John Howe's skill. Though the armor does seem a bit extravagant and Gimli somehow seems a little bit flat to me I cant give it less then a 5.

THis is exactly how I pictured Gimli. But Legolas just looks too flashy. True, the Elves are supposed to be a beautiful people with great skills, but I never imagined them to appear like someone out of Final Fantasy.

Well Aolelorne, I believe you should think about your comment! John Howe is an extremely talented artist and is, in my opinion, the best of all of the Tolkien illustrators. This is absolutely amazing. I do have to agree with Scythe that Gimli could have used a little work, but Legolas is just perfect. It's just like I thought he would be, except for the fact that I didn't think he wore a helm, but thinking back it might have been something I'd overlooked while reading the book and to be honest I like it. Unlike some other people here, it doesn't bother me one bit. He looks great with one on. He also appears to be gazing at something, something far away, something only an Elf could see. Beautiful!

Legolas only took mail, not full armour from Theoden. Gimli's good but do you really think he traveled with all that mail? Dwarves are tough but that's just plain ridiculous. Also, Gimli's shield should have a white horse on a green field. But all in all, I commend John Howe on a well painted picture.

Gimli is exactly how I imagined him - like a short Viking. But Legolas is 'over the top', as someone who needed to draw a bow quickly, this armour would have slowed him down. Don't like the spiked extensions on his helm either.

I really like this picture! It is wonderfully done and the sunlight is really pretty! The amour on Legolas does make him look like a noble warrrior, but to man like. He is a Wood-Elf remember. This is something the Eldar would wear. Gimli looks so sad....and the hlem is a little creepy! But above that I love it!!!

I too pictured Gimli shorter and stockier, but this suits him to! That's just my mind. Legolas's helm is totally cool though I think he'd look better without it but it could be wors and it's original! Very very good- and Legolas is meant 2 be prepared 4 battle isn't he?

I too pictured Gimli shorter and stockier, but this suits him to! That's just my mind. Legolas's helm is totally cool though I think he'd look better without it but it could be wors and it's original! Very very good- and Legolas is meant 2 be prepared 4 battle isn't he?

I love the armor that Legolas is wearing! Wish I could see more of the bow. The contrast between Legolas and Gimli is cool. Also love the reflection off Gimli's shield...

I love the armor, its so original and breathtakingly beautiful. Gimli looks great, Laegolas too. Yet, Laegolas doesn't have the right beon structure in his face. I don't know what is wrong, just something is wrong! It's not Laegolas, just another cool elf in armor. Sorry.

Border_elf 2002 is right.It's not legolas.TOOOOO serious if you see hoe he jokes at certain points(such as the orc killing game at helm's deep).I mean whatever one might say on that topic the gleam that SHOULD have been in his eyes isnt there.Gimli's face looks lopsided but it's ok i guess.Armor is BWOW! awesome.More elvish than anything.

I thought it was a breath taking picture; another tribute to John Howe's skill. Though the armor does seem a bit extravagant and Gimli somehow seems a little bit flat to me I cant give it less then a 5.
