The American Film Institue (AFI) has name it's top genre films of all time, and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring came in at #2 in the top 10 Fantasy Films of all time.

It's perhaps a bit odd, that only that film was named, but it seems the committee in charge of naming the films didn't want to put more than 1 film of a trilogy in (in the Sci-Fi category, only Star Wars made it in, even though most fans and critics agree The Empire Strikes back was a much stronger film).

Additionally, it strikes me as curious that films such as It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, Field of Dreams, and Big were all in the same category with LOTR--those films may have fantastic elements, but I certainly wouldn't call them fantasy films.

Click here to see details on the entire list or view a few video clips with Sean Astin and Dominic Monaghan posing some thoughts on LOTR.  Here is the top 10 fantasy films list:

1. The Wizard of Oz (1939)
2. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
3. It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
4. King Kong (1933)
5. Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
6. Field of Dreams (1989)
7. Harvey (1950)
8. Groundhog Day (1993)
9. The Thief of Bagdad (1924)
10. Big (1988)
